The New Barn: echoes of a previous existence

The New Barn is shown on the 1840 tithe map of North Somerset. When New Barn Wood was planted in 1924, the New Barn had already been there for more than 60 years.

An account of the New Barn written in the 1968, before it was demolished, describes it as follows:

“The barn is cross-shaped and built of stone; it is lofty with a gable roof. Two long byres extending the eastern and western arms of the cross have roof supported by thick stone pillars. The buildings are surrounded by middens within a stone wall, which forms a square enclosure, with a gateway on each of four sides.”

The account also reports that between 1914 and 1947 the western end of the Ashton Court Estate parkland was used for arable and stock farming, which was centred on the area of the New Barn.

The byres housed 100 beef cattle, and a stockman lived in a small cottage within the boundary walls.

There was also a Dutch barn which at some point was destroyed by fire.

Another (undated account) describes it as follows:

“New Barn structure. In 1960 it was still here. Cruciform – all stone with slate tiles. It had pigs in. Very high building. Circular stone pillars supported smaller barns. Roof deteriorated – led to being destroyed. Stone plundered. Main building used for agricultural land on top of plateau. Bothies there for all the farm hands.”

An Oxford Archaeological Unit report (undated) noted the New Barn:

“An enclosed farmstead. Post medieval. First seen on map of 1841 map, altered 1889. … Wall remains largely intact to a height of c2.75m. Metalled road and buildings adjoining the main wall remains. Much rubble in the enclosed area.”

The whole complex apart from the boundary walls, a wall within the boundary, and some other small features was demolished in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

All that remains today are: brick remains of buildings inside the north wall, some sort of pits inside just to the left of the old main south side entrance, a part wall inside running from north to south very thick with a clearly marked corner, one gatepost south side, one gate post east side and the remains of the southside gate.
