A CENTURY OF CONTRASTING WORLDS

The Timeline looks at the lives and events in the 50 years or so before and after
the building of the Ashton Gatehouse.

We look at 3 zones of life:

• the privileged business and private lives of the Smyths at Ashton court;

• the sometimes wretched events and lives of local men, women and children living beyond the walls of Ashton Court

• and the often indifferent or reactionary national and public world.

It was a revolutionary time of much social, political and technical change and some lasting legacies.
